Owing to instances of criminal suspects taking shelter in rented premises under the guise of tenants has driven the Chennai police to make tenant verification by landlords a mandatory step, says City Police Commissioner S. George.
In an attempt to make it easy for the authorities to track suspects and prevent anti-social activities, Chennai police taken this drastic action, where landlords, who have rented out their premises to tenants,have to mandatorily furnish details of their tenants to the police. The police authorities are going all out to gather information of tenants across the city and are currently in the process of cataloguing the details. The police have sought cooperation of both the landlords and their tenants to comply with the order to ensure security and safety of the general public.
One of the recent events that caught the attention of the authorities, landlords and co-tenants alike is the arrest of an Al-Qaida operative named Dawood Suleiman from the city. His co-tenant and the landlord were caught off guard and expressed shock over the circumstance. Such incidents have made the police authority to hasten up the process of gathering tenant’s information from across the city.
As per the order, homeowners are required to submit the details of their tenants within 15 days from renting out the premises in the format prescribed by the police authorities. This format/form, also known as Tenant Verification /Information Form has been made available in the public domain in Tamil and English Languages.
List of information that you have to provide in the form before submitting the same at the local police station include –
- Name of the Landlord
- Occupation and Residential Details – Address, Phone Number etc
- Tenant Information –Photograph, Name, Father’s Name, Permanent and Previous Addresses, Contact No, Date of Occupation and Date of Vacation of the previous residence, Identification Proof (Passport, Driving Licence, Arms Licence, Ration card, Voter 10, PAN Card)

Landlords such as NRIs and others who stay away from their premises might face difficulty handing over information to the authorities in Chennai. But, this shouldn’t be a problem if your property is being managed by Rental or Property Management companies.
